Scorpions in summer: why they come inside
Heat and drought push striped bark scorpions into Austin homes. Where they hide, where they come in, and what keeps them out.

The striped bark scorpion is the only scorpion common in Austin homes. It's tan-yellow with two dark stripes down its back. In hot, dry summers, it comes inside looking for water and the insects it eats.
Where they come in
- Weep holes in brick and stone
- Gaps under doors and around pipes
- The roofline and attic, where they drop down through light fixtures
Where they hide
Bathtubs, sinks, bedding, shoes, and towels. On the west side (Lakeway, Bee Cave, Dripping Springs, Cedar Park, and Leander), they live in the surrounding limestone, so the goal is steady control rather than a one-time fix.
How we treat them
An inside and outside treatment, attic dust, and a yard granule to cut down the crickets and roaches they hunt. We treat weep holes, the roofline, and rock borders. Scorpions are covered between quarterly visits.
At home
- Pull beds away from walls so bedding doesn't touch the floor.
- Shake out shoes and towels.
- Move woodpiles and landscape rock away from the house.
- A UV flashlight at night shows where they're getting in.
