What are Carpet Beetles and why are they a problem?

Adult Carpet Beetles are oval shaped ranging in various colors from black to white, brown-yellow, and orange patterned. The beetles range in size from 1/16 to 1/8 inch long. Just as their names suggests Carpet Beetles infest carpets. Carpet beetles do not just infest and feed on carpets. Carpet Beetles, like clothes moths, feed on materials within your home like wool, fur, felt, silk, feathers, and leather. Polyester and Rayon are rarely attacked unless they are blended with wool, or heavily soiled with body oils. The Carpet Beetle damage often gets mistaken for clothes moths.   Adult Carpet Beetles do not seek out carpet to feed on because they are pollinators. It is their larvae that feed on rugs and other fabrics. The mature beetles fly into yards around springtime looking for pollen inadvertently flying or crawling into your home through open windows, doors, or any cracks in your siding. Carpet Beetles find dark areas in your home where they like to eat and where females lay between 50 to 100 eggs. In some cases breeding areas are in obvious like a dark carpeted closet. Other times breeding sites in your home are more subtle. For example,  where pet hair and dust accumulates like air vents and baseboards.  Carpet Beetle Larvae are about 1/8 to 1/4 -inch long, tan to brownish in color, slow-moving, and covered with hairs. The Larvae sheds its skin and graze along the surface of vulnerable fabrics. As they graze, they often leave irregular holes, mocking clothes moths’ holes. Carpet Beetle Larvae can also infest any part of the home, often making extermination difficult.
