What Does Clover Look Like?

There are multiple species of clover you may encounter in your Austin lawn or garden. Clover is generally characterized by a compound green leaf (generally 3 petals on each leaf) with a bit of a white chevron against the green background. You may also see very small “teeth” or etching around the tips of the leaves. When in bloom, clover flowers appear white or pinkish-red.

Yellow Wood Sorrel vs Clover

Yellow wood sorrel, or Oxalis, is very commonly mistaken for clover, however, these are two completely different weed species. Yellow wood sorrel has a compound, three-petaled leaf shape, much like clover. However, the leaves of the Oxalis plant are heart-shaped, while clover has oval-shaped leaves with a textured appearance. The easiest, most obvious way to tell these weeds apart are by their flowers: Yellow wood sorrel has a yellow, standard shaped flower, while white clover or strawberry/red clover has a white or pinkish-red flower that is shaped more like an umbrella or Christmas tree light.

Clover Identification and Clover Management

Clover can have an annual or perennial life cycle. Most clover germinates in fall, but the germination period can last well through the winter. This means it’s important to enlist preventative pre-emergent clover control services in the summer. Three of the main types of clover Austin clients may encounter are Annual Clover (generally affects turfgrass); Sweetclover (generally found in ornamental grasses); and Perennial White Clover or Strawberry Clover (affects turfgrass.)

Why should you get rid of clover in your yard? Clover can become a major problem for your Austin property for three main reasons:

  1. Clover attracts bees. This can make it unsafe for people with allergies and increase the risk of children and pets getting stung when playing outside.
  2. Clover looks different and grows at a different rate than your natural grass. This disrupts the uniformity of your lawn, and doesn’t look very appealing.
  3. Burclover produces annoying prickly burs that can hurt bare feet or become attached to fur and clothing.

How Do I Get Rid of Clover in My Yard?

Clover has a hard seed coat that can withstand the Austin heat and allows the seeds to survive longer than alternative weed species. Clover can multiply quickly over several years, making consistent pre-emergent and post-emergent clover control necessary on a regular basis.
