Crabgrass
Thin or scalped lawn areas, sidewalk edges, and bare spots, especially in full sun.

How to recognize it
Light-green, wide-bladed grass that grows flat in a star-shaped clump and sends out finger-like seed heads.
Why it shows up
It sprouts in spring once soil warms, spreads fast in summer, and dies in fall, leaving bare spots for more seed.
How we treat it
Pre-emergent in late winter keeps seeds from sprouting. For crabgrass already up, we add a crabgrass product to the lawn treatment. We can't treat crabgrass in St. Augustine without harming the lawn.
What you can do
- Mow high so turf shades the soil
- Apply pre-emergent before soil temperatures reach 55°F in late February
Where we treat crabgrass
Season in Central Texas: Active Mar–Sep; peak Apr–Aug.
