If you have St. Augustine and you are seeing a discoloration on your grass blades, you may be dealing with Gray Leaf Spot.

Gray Leaf Spot is a fungal disease caused by Pyricularia Grisea. Gray leaf spot is predominantly found on St. Augustine grass, but occasionally can be found on Bermuda, and Zoysia. Gray Leaf Spot starts small and is brown in color. It then expands rapidly into large, oval, tan to gray spots surrounded by purple borders. Borders can also be yellow.

During humid, warm weather the Pyricularia Grisea fungus produces a grayish cotton like growth with numerous spores. The Gray Leaf Spot will cause the grass blades to wither and die if there are multiple spots. As the disease progresses, large areas of grass may have the appearance of drought conditions.

Gray Leaf Spot thrives in temperatures between 77 ͒ and 86 ͒ F during daytime hours, and 65 ͒ F at nighttime, and is most severe in humid and rainy periods. The fungus can survive and withstand dry summer conditions. When favorable conditions of moisture and high humidity return, the fungus produces a large amount of spores that are spread by wind, irrigation, or the movement of lawn equipment on wet grass. Because Grey Leaf Spot spreads with lawn equipment, it is very common that mowers will spread the disease from one lawn to another. Ideally, landscapers will rinse their blades in between jobs to help protect your yard.
