Maggots are the larvae of a fly, particularly larvae from houseflies, cheeseflies, blowflies, and bluebottle flies. Once a fly is spotted, you may be left wondering where and how many eggs are around on your Austin area property.
Flies are attracted to rotting food, animal carcasses, trash, feces and any other dirty or unsanitary area. Female flies can lay their eggs into rotting food, and maggots will start to appear about 7 to 24 hours after. When the larvae hatch they begin to feed on anything that they can find. Maggots live for about 5 to 6 days before transitioning to pupae, and eventually into adult flies.
Maggots can either be white or grey, measuring up to 3/4 of an inch. Maggots have a body that extends to a point. Their heads are pointed with a blunt bottom half. Maggots have breathing holes on the bottom of their bodies that are brown. Many mistake their breathing holes as eyes. Maggots are able to breathe while burrowing since they breathe out of their bottoms. Maggots have mouths that look like hooks. Their hooked mouths allow them to burrow their way into their food, leaving chewed holes scattered throughout. Maggots thrive in spring and summer when the weather is hotter and flies are more active.
Maggots are not necessarily destructive but Maggots do carry bacteria so it is important to look for flies as well as maggots. Maggots do not just appear out of nowhere. Flies hover around trash, and other dirty areas, so it would be a good idea to start inspecting those areas. If you do spot maggots, call the experts at Magic Pest and Lawn. Magic Pest can identify Maggots and come up with a treatment to get rid of them.
