Grass Types · Austin, Texas
St. Augustine Grass
Moderate shade to full sun, with regular watering.

How to recognize it
Wide, flat, blue-green blades that spread by thick above-ground runners. It's the most common lawn grass in Austin.
Why it shows up
It handles shade better than Bermuda but needs more water and is prone to chinch bugs, gray leaf spot, and brown patch.
How we treat it
Our program works for St. Augustine, with two exceptions: we can't treat crabgrass or winter rye in it without damaging the lawn.
What you can do
- Mow at 3 to 4 inches
- Water deeply once or twice a week in summer
- Avoid summer nitrogen
